Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip would have celebrated their wedding anniversary today, marking 76 years of married life.

It was a royal love story for the ages, which dates back to 1934, when a then Princess Elizabeth, aged eight, and Prince Philip of Greece and Denmark, aged 13, met for the first time at the wedding of Prince George, Duke of Kent, and Princess Marina.

Though their meeting sparked interest in one-another, it wasn’t until 1939 where the pair’s romance would truly blossom. This time, a 13-year-old Princess Elizabeth would meet an 18-year-old Prince Philip, who was part of the Royal Navy, during a visit to Dartmouth.

The couple maintained contact ever since, becoming pen pals through the Second World War, while Prince Philip was stationed across Europe, Canada and Japan.

Following his return to the UK, Prince Philip would visit King George VI, father of Princess Elizabeth, and ask for her hand in marriage.

The couple’s deep, unwavering love for each other lasted until the very end, and became the very heart of British monarchy. They would go on to share four children, eight grandchildren, and thirteen great-grandchildren together.

Their marriage would last 73 years, until Prince Philip’s death on April 8, 2021, with a widowed Queen Elizabeth leading the charge at his COVID-restricted funeral. She went on to continue her duties until her death on September 8, 2022.
