Best European winter destination on a budget is absolutely ‘beautiful’ | Travel News | Travel

Adventure seekers could speed down the mountains and then enjoy a hot toddy beside a warming, roaring fire.

Close by, you can head to Avoriaz, France, in winter, which offers high-altitude skiing surrounded by 1960s-designed, angular cedar-clad high-rises.

The varied terrain of Avoriaz is perfect for beginners and intermediate skiers to enjoy their holiday.

Do note it’s a car-free resort, located in the heart of the Portes du Soleil ski area.

Tripadvisor reviewer David C, from Billericay, said: “Love Avoriaz as a place to ski. The runs are beautiful and great fun.”

Another, Szymon M from Southampton, said: “Food in restaurants fairly priced and very good quality. Highly recommended resort for people who ski.”

Vogel in Slovenia has 13 miles of blue and red pistes, so it’s a good one for more regular skiers to feel a bit challenged.

Described as a “bargain” resort by Lonely Planet, Vogel has “unforgettable views of the Julian Alps”.

For those more interested in the aprés-ski culture, they should head to Boí Taüll, Spain.

The runs may be for mostly advanced skiers but, off the slopes, there is plenty to see.

People can choose to spend lazy afternoons strolling around Unesco-listed Romanesque churches.

Hugh W, from Glasgow wrote on Tripadvisor: “There are two Romanesque churches in Taull dating from the 11/12th centuries.

“Santa Maria is located in the town square… atmospheric. St Climent has achieved fame because of the wall paintings which were hidden for many years.”

Well-known Verbier, in Switzerland, is another great ski resort within Europe. Attracting world-class athletes, this run is recommended for experienced skiers only.
