Island with hardly any tourists has most beautiful starry sky | Travel News | Travel
Croatia is fast establishing itself as the go-to spot for budding holidaymakers thanks to its stunning and diverse natural beauty.
Destinations such as Dubrovnik, Split, and Zagreb are all incredibly popular – and for good reason – but tourists wanting some peace and quiet should visit one of Croatia’s lesser-known islands.
Home to under 1000 inhabitants, Lastovo is an island situated off the coasts of both Split and Dubrovnik, somewhere in the Adriatic Sea between the two.
Well and truly off the beaten track, Lastovo is known as ‘The Island of Bright Stars’, after having been scientifically proven to have the ‘most beautiful starry night sky in Europe’.
Not just a smash hit for stargazers, the island is equally as beautiful during daylight hours.
Escape from reality at one of the many quiet and pristine beaches such as Krucica or Mihajla and feel the hours gently pass by as you watch over the tranquil Adriatic.
Perhaps enjoy a picnic at the picturesque Korita Bay as the sun reflects off the sea, sparkling like the night sky to follow.
Keen hikers can enjoy the ‘Via the Present to the Past’ trail, which passes through significant habitats rich in plant and animal species – in fact around 70 percent of the islands’ surface is covered with forest.
You’ll pass Aleppo pine and evergreen oak, as well as vineyards and olive groves before passing through the charming town of Lastovo itself.
One of the best ways to see the island, besides walking, is cycling. Bikes can be hired on the island and the local tourist office on the island are on hand to suggest some trails to follow.
For fans of the water, Diving Centre Ancora in Zaklopatica offers dives for all abilities for a chance to experience stunning underwater reliefs and rich marine life.
There is only one hotel on the island, the aptly named Hotel Solitudo. A stay here guarantees breathtaking views over beautiful untouched nature.
