Rugby World Cup LIVE: New Zealand rocked before Ireland as England team slammed | Rugby | Sport

Kevin Sinfield revealed yesterday that best friend Rob Burrow will be in his thoughts as England take on Fiji in today’s Rugby World Cup final.

Former Leeds rugby league ace Burrow, who is suffering with Motor Neurone Disease, has become a big England union fan since Sinfield joined the squad as defence coach.

And Sinfield, who has raised more than £8m for MND charities, says he will be drawing inspiration from his ex-teammate today.

“I think it’s my family the most but also there’s my good mate Rob, who’s probably partly why I’m here,” said Sinfield. “He’s been watching the games at home, and he’s becoming a bit of a fan, so he’ll be tuning in. He’s been really enjoying it. He would have made a great (union) scrum-half by the way.”

Sinfield also defended head coach Steve Borthwick’s decision to ditch specialist full-back Freddie Steward for Marcus Smith who has started just one game in his career in the No 15 shirt.

“It’s not about who is the best, it’s about who gives us the best chance of winning tomorrow. Marcus has been incredible all the time we’ve been in camp,” he said.
