The city with the world’s best public transport is a top tourist destination | Travel News | Travel

As car hire costs soar around the globe, more and more British tourists are relying on public transport to get around on holiday. But this can be easier said than done.

In some cities public transport feels like an afterthought with irregular service, high costs and a lack of options. So which of the world’s cities have the best public transport systems?

The expat experts at William Russell looked for the cities leading the way on public transport. From extensive metro routes to e-bikes, there’s several destinations where tourists might not miss their car.

According to the team’s research Paris, the French capital city, came out on top. It’s good news for tourists travelling to the city for next year’s Olympics and the capital has just been named one of the best cities to visit in 2024.

A William Russell spokesperson said: “Almost 70 percent of residents in the French capital use Metro, buses or suburban trains to commute to work.”

Despite Paris regularly being named as one of the world’s most expensive cities, public transport is relatively affordable. The average ticket costs just £1.85.

However, tourists will no longer be able to use the city’s e-scooters. Despite being the first city in Europe to welcome the scooters in 2018, almost 90 percent of residents voted to ban them in 2023.

Stockholm, Sweden’s green capital city, took second place in the rankings. The city is aiming to be fossil fuel free by 2040 and has an extensive public transport system.
